The presence of United Church of Canada in the Alberni Valley has spanned over 120 years. The Alberni Valley is known as “the city with a heart” the United Church of Canada in the Valley focuses on being a church with a heart.
We are committed to living into right relationship with all people and creation. We acknowledge and accept that as The United Church of Canada have participated in wounding people and creation in the past. We ask for forgiveness and help as we make amends. We believe that by connecting with all people we will grow and change and emerge a more compassionate, caring and healing community of faith.
Alberni Valley United Church emerged through the grace and faithfulness of St. Andrews United Church and First United Church. This amalgamation was established on June 30, 2001.
St. Andrew’s United Church first “worship service was first held November 13, 1886. It was conducted by Rev. Alexander Dunn and was held in a small hut near Mr. Saunder's store on the south side of the Somas River. He was a Presbyterian missionary. The first church building was completed in 1892 and sat at the corner of Elizabeth and Johnston.
First United Church began when the Methodist Church was established in the early 1900's, worshipping first at the corner of Third and Angus, and then moving to a building on Argyle and 4th in 1912.
The United Church of Canada itself emerged 1925 when the Methodist Church, Canada, the Congregational Union of Canada, and 70 per cent of the Presbyterian Church of Canada entered into union. It was the first union of churches in the world to cross historical denominational lines.
Following in that tradition, in 2001 St. Andrews and First United Churches shared the best of their past, bringing together their strengths, missions, and passions creating a new congregation which reflects the values of both founding churches.
Today Alberni Valley United Church is an appreciative, caring, and compassionate community of faith and our purpose is to make a life giving difference in the world. We are committed to appreciating people’s strengths and helping one another to shine. Children and adults join together in worship, outreach, and cross-generational fun filled activities. We celebrate with joy, accept the God-given uniqueness of each person and find strength in cultural diversity as we discern how God is asking us to live with respect in creation.
Alberni Valley United Church is a place where people find meaning, support and encouragement. We desire to make a difference the appreciative way as we focus on strengths and helping one another to shine.
